From Galileo to The Renaissance

The Renaissance Pittsburgh Hotel Celebrates Global Day of Discovery

June 16, 2014, Pittsburgh, PA – The Renaissance Pittsburgh Hotel is kicking off its “Summer of Discovery,” inviting hotel guests and the local community to marvel at the wonders of the universe with a premier “Stargazing” event on Thursday, June 26, 2014 from 6:00-8:00pm. The event, which will take place simultaneously with over 150 Renaissance Hotels around the world, is part of the lifestyle hotel brand’s third annual “Global Day of Discovery.”

“We are thrilled to take part in this worldwide Renaissance initiative,” says Paul Newmaster, General Manager of Renaissance Pittsburgh Hotel. “We have centered our “Global Day of Discovery” celebration around the fascinating and little-known world of astronomy to fully embrace our brand’s “Live Life To Discover” mantra. Guests will have an entirely unique opportunity to be engaged and inspired by stargazing phenomena.”

As revolutionary astronomer and philosopher, Galileo, was once inspired by the artistic tradition of the Italian renaissance period, the ornate lobby of The Renaissance Pittsburgh Hotel is set to become the launch pad for an evening devoted to astronomy’s infinite frontier. The “Stargazing” event will feature a guided planetary exploration by Dr. Brendan Mullan, Astrobiologist and newly appointed Planetarium Director of the Carnegie Science Center, along with additional esteemed members of the Amateur Astronomers Association of Pittsburgh (AAAP) and their telescopes on a luxurious patio of The Renaissance Hotel. Guests will have the rare opportunity to put their astronomical questions to experts in the field and receive insightful outreach materials from The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

The celestial evening will also include a screening of the visually stunning film, “Undaunted” – The Forgotten Giants of the Allegheny Observatory, A Film By Dan Hadley, featuring the original musical score by Scott Michael Burns; as well as a poetry performance by acclaimed actor, Randy Kovitz, who currently stars in the hit movie, “Fault in our Stars.” Sonically immersive live music by DETOUR will play throughout the lobby, with art installations by visual artist, Ben Tabas, mapping the event into a virtual space by combining retro, contemporary and sci-fi video fragments on screen; as well as astrophotographer, Bill Snyder, showcasing his fascinating artwork.

Attendees will also be able to enjoy complimentary signature “Moonwalk” cocktails and savory hors d’oeuvres as they explore the magnificent intrigue of the cosmic ceiling.

Attendance is free of charge and RSVP’s are accepted here.
